PRINCES MEAD SCHOOL

A contemporary extension to this Grade II* listed school building. Formerly Worthy Park House this Georgian manor house has been the home of Princes Mead School since 1999. They were in dire need of additional accommodation and this new building provides a new dining hall, a kitchen, classrooms and a digital study space.

“Working on a listed building in a live school environment presented a few challenges but the design team and contractor worked together very successfully to overcome them.”

The need for clear, open areas and to lightly embrace the existing building led us to select a braced steel frame for the primary structure. The ground and first floors use precast concrete for simplicity and ease of construction. A lightweight steel frame system has been used to form the external walls and these are finished with a high-quality facing brick to tie in with the existing house façade.
