OBSERVATORY CLOSE

Extension to the rear of this 16th Century, Grade II listed cottage.

As tends to be the case with heritage projects the emphasis is always on the detail. In this instance we were required to keep the new structure wholly independent of the existing cottage and the neighbouring house.

The extension is constructed using load bearing masonry walls; these are blockwork internally and faced with hand knapped, locally won flint externally. The flints are set in a pale lime mortar to complement, rather than be a facsimile of the existing cottages flint bands.

The extension joins the existing building only via a glazed slot – this brings light down into the kitchen and allows the extension to remain sub-servient to the main cottage.
