ESHER HOUSE

A large scale rear extension to a suburban detached house in the heart of Surrey.

Designed in a contemporary style, to contrast with the 1930’s vernacular, the extension provides additional entertaining and living space. To create the large, clear spans we opted to use a pair of steel portal frames. These allowed us to keep the vertical structure hidden within the blade piers either side of the folding, sliding doors.

The roof overhang and the brise soleil create a thermal bridge with the main roof structure. To overcome this we incorporated a Schöck Isokorb thermal break system; these are specifically designed to provide insulation between interconnected steel elements. Overall lateral resistance for the frame is provided by portal action for the garden elevation with the remote ends of the roof beams built in to the existing house wall.
